I’m starting an informal invitation-only e-magazine, and anyone receiving this is invited to subscribe. As many in the first tiers of my e-mail tree will know, I am or at least was an award-winning writer on the verge of finally making things substantial and fulltime happen with my writing. I had some of the most exciting indications in years, then the recession hit, impacting many writers hard. Books, stories, and articles continue to be published, but most of these works have been in the pipeline for up to five years, or are granted to in-house writers. Few publishers are willing to take on new material right now, so few agents are willing to sign new clients (yes, I’m still working on this). Oddly enough I’m writing like a mad fiend; it doesn’t seem to matter that I’m not selling a word. Once I attract the attention of an agent, needed for novel submissions, I’ll have a bookcase of material to offer! ;D
The reason for this tree: I’m taking my own economic bull by the horns, never one to “sit back and wait for...” I have serious, financially draining medical issues that keep me largely homebound (but, happily, fingers on keyboard). Trust me, the ‘public programs’ are not enough. I’m not homeless. Yet. My utilities haven’t been cut off. Yet. I am not out of vital meds. Yet. I haven’t come to the end of groceries. Yet. My 17-year-old car hasn’t died. Yet. All these and more loom large.
I’m asking for a mere $5.00 (US funds) donation. Who doesn't have five dollars to spare (the cost of a coffee drink)? Even I have five dollars at this instant, in quarters, mostly, but I have at least five, until I buy milk this week. My needs are simple; I’ve become a master at squeezing every penny till it shrieks. If this tree branches out enough, I can have a respite. I’ll gratefully accept more than $5, but this is all I ask. Your personal introduction will open the door…”This is from my sister, friend, e-pal, whatever, let’s give her a shot”. Copy/paste this letter or forward it to everyone you think might join, ask them to send it to others and they to others and on, fanning out the tree.
I offer a piece of original of fiction to be e-mailed to each person who chooses a one-time donation. For monthly donors I will send the e-magazine including: fiction; my slant on social, cultural and political issues; life observations; perhaps even some good old-fashioned rants; and exclusive looks ahead at what’s happening in my career. I’ll also open it up to select Letters to the Editor as things get going. This would hardly be a chore for me! I love to write against deadline. This would have the net result of also increasing the number of smaller works I’d have in my own files to submit later, a win-win all around. For a reasonable fee I also write ‘custom’ pieces, for anniversaries, birthdays, any special occasions, or remembrances (two-legged or four!).
Please send cash, I don’t want the headaches of clearing and crediting. Yes, it’s safe to mail cash, as long as you wrap it in a sheet or two of paper and securely seal the envelope. Include your name and e-mail address and I will send my PO Box and such.
Please feel free to e-mail me to verify that this isn’t some hoax or spam, that I am indeed a real person in real need with a real offer for you. Everyone who comes on board will have a say in how I pay it forward in the future. I hope you join in saving a struggling writer, and you’ll have some unusual and original monthly entertainment to boot! ;D I look forward to serving you with the first issue of Lingua E-Zine ©.
